The History

The Barn at Quaker Hill has a rich history that began with our founder Lowell Thomas. Lowell Thomas, author, explorer, world adventurer and chronicler, war correspondent and radio commentator moved to Pawling, New York with his wife Francis in 1926. In the late 1930ʼs Lowell Thomas purchased an old dairy barn and property to use as a community center. Touring the property one day with his friend and world famous golfer Eugene (Gene) Sarazen the idea of a golf course was born. They contacted another friend, renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. who designed our acclaimed golf course.

Quaker Hill Country Club was opened on May 30, 1941. Since then Quaker Hill Country Club has hosted Presidents and world leaders, radio broadcasts, historical events, as well as tournaments and grand parties. At Quaker Hill Country Club history abounds from the great golf course to the beautiful converted dairy barn. Memorabilia and photographs fill the clubhouse. The centerpiece of the barn is the grand “History of Civilization” fireplace containing artifacts from around the world detailing the history of mankind.
